Signify Sign Language Learning App
User Experience Design Project | UX Designer
This collaborative project for Signify, a mobile sign language learning app, aimed to promote inclusive communication between Deaf and hearing individuals through intuitive digital design. As the UX/UI Designer and Accessibility Advocate, I collaborated with a multidisciplinary team to design interactive learning tools, build user-centered flows, and develop an accessible interface that supports visual learning, empathy, and everyday connection.

We interviewed Deaf and hearing individuals to understand their communication challenges and learning preferences. We also examined sign language apps to identify usability gaps. Many current apps lacked real-world application scenarios and did not accommodate diverse learning speeds. After two rounds of research, we streamlined app features, focusing on the learning journey for those wishing to learn sign language and communicate smoothly with the Deaf community.
Discovery & Research
The Signify project followed a five-week structured research and design process, beginning with participant recruitment and progressing through user interviews, testing, data analysis, and final wireframe development. I contributed to organizing research activities, conducting interviews, analyzing user feedback, and refining the app’s wireframes based on real user insights. This timeline ensured that every design decision was rooted in accessibility, inclusivity, and user-centered thinking.
Project Flow & Management
We chose a friendly and inclusive design with soft colours, rounded icons, and playful animations to reduce learning anxiety. Illustrated signs and avatar feedback enhance visual learning, while clarity and inclusive imagery ensure a comfortable experience for diverse users. Our goal is to foster an engaging environment that encourages exploration and a sense of belonging.
UI Design & Branding
Low-fidelity wireframes defined the app’s basic structure, emphasizing simplicity, straightforward navigation, and high-contrast visuals. We then built high-fidelity interactive prototypes using Figma, focusing on the homepage dashboard, vocabulary cards, and a real-time translation screen. Prototypes were tested internally and iterated to enhance clarity and motivation for learning.
Wireframing & Prototyping
We conducted usability testing with a mix of beginner and experienced users. Feedback revealed confusion around navigation labels and lesson tracking. Based on this, we adjusted our icon system, added a lesson progress bar, and simplified the onboarding process. These iterations made the app more user-friendly and accessible.
Testing & Iteration
This project significantly enhanced my understanding of inclusive design and accessibility in digital learning tools. Working closely with a marginalized community provided me with valuable insights into their unique challenges and needs. I learned to balance functionality with empathy, ensuring my designs were not only effective but also considerate.
